A job to do...

The crabby old dog is still around, but keeps to the work at hand. I did keep a low profile for a while, but now I'm back, but a bit quieter these days. I am still committed to doing my part to insure HC.com is and will always be the premier SOHC CB750 chopper site on the net. I have had a long standing passion for the CB750, and it all started by accident, (well, my Dad loved them too so that may have played a part). I built my first hard tailed SOHC CB750 in my early 20s, my chop came together beginning in 1986 and finshing in 1988. I built the bagger back in 07-08 which is my daily rider.

The carb info I used to have in this profile is now EXCLUSIVELY part of HC.com, The BEST SOHC CB750 Chopper site on the net. All others are just imitations.

I still rebuild carbs but the customer must have a good understanding of their mill. A clean and set up rack of carbs will not solve many problems such as weak spark, low system voltage, incorrect valve lash, and poor compression to name a few. My prices have gone up reflecting the amount of work that goes into rebuilding and in particular detailing a set. I also have to have something to work with. I can no longer perform miracles. Badly corroded, damaged, or sets missing parts are not rebuild candidates. If it is just gunk and the usual clogging from sitting too long it is a go, but if there is moderate to heavy corrosion, especially in the bowl cavities on the castings there is only so much I can do. I can't bring them back from the dead. It's best if you open the bowls to check, and sending me some pics of this could possibly save you shipping. Feel free to look around the carb section on my personal site, and all the tech info that used to be there is now in the Garage section.

Ride safe!
CB750 SOHC 4 ever.
Neal (A.K.A. Houndog750)

Have party pics that aren't in THE LIST? Add em (Read the info in that post first)! Got submissions for the HC.com galleries? The bottom of THIS PAGE tells how to get em up there. Got additions for the Garage? Drop me a PM and I'll pass it along for approval.

Carb Work

Carb Rebuilding and Detailing
  pic1.jpg
Note: Pictures above depict full detailing of carbs that were in very good condition to start with. Results depend on the condition of the carbs. In other words a polished turd is still a turd.

Rates
My rates are essentially based on how much time it requires allowing myself $10 an hour. Granted it is not as cheap as Walmart would pay an "associate" but there again I recieve no benefits such as paid vactaion, sick days, or medical insurance. If you feel this is excessive I would suggest you price out similar services before making any assumptions. Also one must ask if they would be willing to work for minimum wage. The cost of materials is folded into my rate as well which on average runs about $7.50 per rack depending on what is done. In short, the materials I use are not free. I do NOT rebuild 69-70 carbs. This Sandcrust silliness is something I much prefer to avoid entirely (unless you are a friend and it is for a chop, not a yuppie status symbol). Carbs MUST BE REBUILDABLE! I will no longer rebuilld carbs that are beyond a useable state of condition.
.
Normally the cost boils down to what I'm asked to do and the cost of parts, Here's a breakdown. Some have asked that I break down detailing to several options as per below: I no longer polish the carb throats as it does not improve performance and cannot be seen when on the bike.
.
Rates/costs (excluding shipping) at a glance:
Service (labor, based on $10.00 per hour)
71-76
77/78
Cleaned and Rebiult (includes materials but not kits or parts)
$100
$100
Detailing (based on $10 per hour) (only with clean and rebuild with kits):

Castings painted (materials included)
$10
$10
Bowls, caps, rings, stay plate visible surfaces (back and sides) polished, rust/corrosion removal as well as can be considering condition. This requires dismantling the stay plate/linkage which with certain stay plates this is not possible because the pin cannot be removed. In these cases you would have to supply one that can be dismantled or I can discount and clean it as a whole.
( materials included)
$45
$45

Kits can be supplied by you or I can order them.
Sources I use are listed in preferred order. Retrobikes is always my first choice. Price is per kit, you'll need 4 each for a rebuild. Almost always a kit from an adjacent year can be substituted but is best if the needle jet nozzle is also included, in fact, that stands as a rule whenever possible.
Retrobikes Carries the kits for K0,K2-K5, K7-K8 A, F2-F3. This is ALWAYS my first pick.
Rusty Riders Carries the kits for the K1-K6, F1 (do a search for CB750 on their site)
Vintage CB750 Carries kits for the K1-K5, F1, repacking kits for K7-K8, and also the accelerator diaphragm for the A and K7-K8.
Note: You WILL need the accelerator pump kit for the K and F 7-8.
.
Rebuilds:  Rebuilds include thorough cleaning and installation of new kits and factory settings which does not incliude the cost of the kits if not provided (I will install kits you provide if you prefer). Kits normally range form approximately $10 per casting to as much as $49 per castings before shipping depending on what needs to be replaced and carb type not including shipping. I use several sources in an attempt to obtain the best pricing without sacrificing quality. I can also provide you with the links to order the kits yourself if you are so inclined. At times the 77/78 carbs require an accelerator pump kit when the one in the set is cracked or hardened. I can normally get these for $16 unless Parts N More is out of stock.
.
Detailing: Detailing requires quite a bit of additional time and additional materials which costs additional labor per above table. Detaiing takes much more time as it also includes complete disassembly and as much rust removed as pysically possible along with as much oxidation/deposits removed as possible. Bare aluminum parts (bowls, caps, stayplates) are either shined or polished. Carb castings can be painted either grey or black, (your choice). This may seem a little expensive but consider this normally takes more time actively working on the carbs to complete. The images at the top of this page are shots of detailed carbs with all options. Any steel parts that can be painted after extensive rust removal will be painted silver or they will simply rust again.
.
Shipping: Shipping costs both ways are the responsibility of the customer. I insist on UPS over USPS as I have had far too many racks handled quite roughly via USPS and some damage resulted from the abuse. If you can, using a business address that regularly ships UPS will save money. Please be sure to pack the carbs well as this is the packaging I will use to return the carbs to you. If carbs are shipped to me in inadequate packaging they will be returned unopened if prepaid or the cost of proper packaging be suppleid by the customer (customer's choice) before return shipment can take place. I'm sorry to be so tough on this but I can't see putting that much time and money into them only to return them in inadequate packaging. Remember, these carbs weigh 12 pounds or more and need good firm packing to keep them from slamming around in the package.
.
Proper packaging according to shipper specifications is at least 2 to 3 inches of firm padding around the item in any direction. I also recommend carbs be shippind with a sealed plastic bag around them to minimize the smell of fuel emanating from the package. This normally causes packages to be opened and possibly held. Carbs should ALWAYS be drained as completely as possible and aired out before shipping. These things are heavy so pack them TIGHT! Tip: Removing the cable mounts helps keep them from "peeking" out of the box along the way. Protect the bowl drain nipples! I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR POOR PACKAGING!
.
Exchange Cores/ Direct Sale: At times I have racks completed ahead of time for sale and if so offer an exchange option for cores in which I will deduct $30 from the normal outright sales cost of either a rebuilt or detailed set of carbs. See "Cores Purchase" below.
.
When I do have sets on hand pricing is based on what I had to pay for the carbs, cost of the kits/parts depending on what is needed, and labor which usually start at about $195 and go up from there depending on type, what I spent on them, rebuild costs, and what was done (just rebuilt or detailed).
.
Exchange cores MUST be physcially intact with no damage, mising parts, excessive corrosion, and in my opinion rebuildable. Partial racks or badly neglected I'll deduct $10 as long as some of the components are reusable. Cores must be received before I discount or refund the $30. I have been burned too many times and now must inspect cores before discount or refund.
..
Cores purchase: At times I also buy used carbs to keep a set on hand at all times. I am willing to pay $30 per set upon receipt. The carbs MUST be physcially intact with no damage, no mising parts, excessive corrosion, and in my opinion rebuildable. If they are not I am willing to ship them back as received but return shipping must be paid in advance or I am willing to pay $10 for use as spare parts. Again, I cannot pay until I have inspected the carbs to insure they can in fact be rebuilt and there is no hidden damage or abuse..

Most who know me know I am more of a critter person than a people person. Well, I like computers too. Sometimes. I have never figured out "people". At least some. The contradictory nature of some has me completely baffled. It simply makes no sense. Maybe it is I am part canine and canines for the most part think logically. I have a handful of "friends" whom I can relate to and understand. But for the...

I'm into the old Honda CB750s, and often have to cruise eBarf for parts. Some things are just not available as aftermarket and leaves me no choice but to hit the largest flea market and side show on the internet today. One thing that I see a lot of simply annoys the crap out of me. Like anything else there sellers soon realize there are certain words that catch a...
  3. Gimme, Barter, or HanginOuts

    04/01/08 02:41:17 | 6 Rant Backs

Did you ever notice there are roughly three types that pass through Hondachopper.com? First are the Gimmes who show up wanting something. Be it parts, help, or money, they are wanting something. Some could give a shit less about anything else. Some are just plain fucking assholes, and usually beat on fairly quickly.

There are three types of Gimmes. The first Gimme is the one that posts wanting help with something. They get their answers, have their problem solved, and then poof you...
